Geocache Description:

On the road between Bloemfontein and Thabanchu. Beware of speed cameras as the limit is 100 kph. Turn of at museum sign.

March 1900. The boer-forces are down-hearted. Bloemfontein had fallen and Paul Kruger is in trouble. And then the news that Genl Christiaan de Wet led the British Forces into a trap at Sannaspos and defeated them. As each wagon came through the drift, 2 burghers armed with Mausers jumped onto the wagon and lead it to a farmhouse. An officer went forward to see what was going on and was asked to surrender. He refused and the battle started.

The boers captured 96 wagons and 18 oxcarts laden with food, clothes and ammunition as well as 7 canons. 373 British soldiers were captured. 13 boers were dead or wounded as well as at least 159 British Troops.

There are two caches, near each other at this site. This one is near the station, which is actually the old Sannaspos station, and the British war graves. One W Churchill is also buried here! The other cache is at the monument erected, commemorating the battle.

Be sure to see the bullet holes in the station building.
