Stepper Point a very dangerous area in olden days (still commands respect) and is the graveyard of over a hundred ships wrecked on the notorious Doom Bar and surrounding beaches and cliffs. The Doom bar ,according to legend was formed after a visiting seaman shot the mermaid who used to guide ships into the safety of the bay. As revenge she created the bar and its shifting sands. The cache is at the mouth of the bay and commands an eyelevel view of what it is now and would have been like entering Padstow. The Daymark (on top of the cliff) was built in 1862 at a cost of £29.00 and is 40ft high. It is used as the name implies to indicate to shipping as to where the bay is situated. Enjoy your walk PLEASE keep dogs on a lead and as with all coastal paths extra care is needed especially with children
