This cache has been archived.

Trail Reader: This cache received its first DNF and I hiked over to check it out. The container had indeed gone missing and I've decided to let this one go. Thanks to all who visited over the years! Archive.

Geocache Description:

Meet Fort Ord Dunes State Park!

Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100 abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout the African ice plant-covered dunes. Because the park has not yet officially opened, access is limited. However, parking and entry are currently available on the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street just east of Highway 1.

This cache series will allow you to hike the roads and tracks of the park while watching for those "what is that doing here?" spots. And keep your eyes open for those numbers!

CACHE DETAILS
In this northern stretch of the park, the dunes appear barren with none of the lush vegetation found on the more southerly hills. Despite their bleak appearance, we are fortunate that they have been preserved for us. Turn around for an amazing contrasting view--train tracks, a bike path, a freeway, and a cluster of "big box" retail. The weathered numbers of 5-0 almost seem to vibrate from the sound of the nearby traffic.

The container is a bison tube with a log. Please bring your own pen.

Oh, and beware of the sewage facilities down the road--time to hold your nose!

UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are 8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free. Parking is available by taking 1st Avenue to the 8th Street bridge--follow the signs.
