5mins easy walk from carpark at the end of Kaweka Road. The road is steep, narrow, and windy (both meanings of the word!), but OK for 2WD cars. It is a well-used route, so you are wise to use your headlights, but don't forget to turn them off!. There are no local garages!
The cache is at elevation 980m, 5mins easy walk from the roadend carpark. It is near a 4-bunk DOC hut, built in 1957 as a trial for the development of the NZ Forest Service SF70 Huts Design. It has been maintained to reflect its original construction, and still has its original open-style fireplace.
Makahu Saddle is an ideal place to start a tramp in any direction, for day-trips, weekenders, or extended trips. See options on DOC websites.
