Geocache Description:

This is a regular lock and lock container placed at one of our favourite views in this area.

Looking out across the Moray Firth you can see the Sutors. The Sutors of Cromarty are two opposing headlands in Easter Ross which mark the entrance to the Comarty Firth. The North Sutor rises to 147 m (486 ft), while the South Sutor reaches 140 m (463 ft).

Sutor is the Scots word for shoemaker, one story tells of two giant shoemakers, the sutors, who used the two cliffs as their workbenches, and tossed their tools to and fro between one another.

The Cromarty Firth is an inlet of the Moray Firth. Formed at the same time as Loch Ness it is a deep natural harbour. In 1912 it became a naval base and provided a safe anchorage for the fleet in both world wars but was abandoned by the 1950’s. Built before the outbreak of World War I, this protection included elaborate defences to protect the firth from U-Boats, including not only the batteries, but a Boom Defence and Minefield, together with Lookout and Observation Posts, and Searchlight Batteries. The entrance to the Firth was easily protected and the Sutors bristled with military fortifications the remains of which can still be seen. More recently the Cromarty Firth has been used for the construction and repair and mothballing of North Sea oil rigs.
