Derweil kein AUFSTIEG möglich. Das Hinweisbild wird euch weiterhelfen!
Daher muss kein Eintritt gezahlt werden, da Ihr den Turm nicht besteigen könnt.

Mit seinen 70 Metern gehört der Perlachturm zu den höchsten Gebäuden in Augsburg. Im Jahr 989 wurde er als Wachturm erbaut. Damals war er nicht einmal halb so hoch wie heute. Im Lauf der Jahrhunderte erlebte er zahlreiche Umgestaltungen.

1526 wurde er auf 63 Meter erhöht. Kurz darauf erhielt der Turm ein Uhrwerk mit Glocke. Als Stadtbaumeister Elias Holl das Rathaus neu errichtete, legte er auch Hand an den Perlachturm.

So erhielt er von 1612 bis 1618 sein heutiges Aussehen mit der Säulenkuppel, dem Zwiebeldach und der aufgesetzten Figur der suebischen Stadtgöttin Cisa.

Woher der Name „Perlach“ kommt, ist heute umstritten. Gängig sind drei Theorien:
- Auf einem Schild im Turm steht, der Name stammt vom Lateinischen „perlego“ (durchlesen). Dies solle daher rühren, dass auf dem Platz vor dem Turm offizielle Verlautbarungen verlesen wurden.
- Besonders populär ist die Auffassung, der Name komme von den altdeutschen Begriffen „Per“ für Bär und „Lach“ für Fest oder Tanz. Demnach wäre der Vorplatz für im Mittelalter übliche Feste mit Tanzbären genutzt worden. Die Bären seien im damals vergitterten Sockel des Turmes gehalten worden.
- Eine dritte Theorie besagt, an dieser Stelle habe einst eine Römische Legion eine Schlacht verloren. „perdita legio“ heißt so viel wie „untergegangene Legion“.

Da keine der drei Theorien historisch belegt ist, wird die Namensherkunft wohl ewig ein Geheimnis bleiben.

With its 70 meters, the Perlachturm is one of the highest buildings in Augsburg. In 989 it was built as a watchtower. At that time it was not even half as high as today. In the course of the centuries it has undergone numerous transformations.

In 1526 it was raised to 63 meters. Shortly afterwards the tower received a clockwork with bell. When master builder Elias Holl rebuilt the town hall, he also laid his hands on the Perlachturm.

From 1612 to 1618 it received its present appearance with the column dome, the onion roof and the attached figure of the Suebian city goddess Cisa.

Where the name "Perlach" comes from is now disputed. Three theories are common:
- On a sign in the tower is written, the name comes from the Latin "perlego" (read through). This is said to be due to the fact that official announcements were read out on the square in front of the tower.
- It is particularly popular that the name comes from the old German terms "Per" for bear and "Lach" for party or dance. According to this, the forecourt would have been used for parties with dancing bears, which were common in the Middle Ages. The bears were kept in the then barred base of the tower.
- A third theory says that a Roman legion once lost a battle at this place. "perdita legio" means "perished legion".

Since none of the three theories is historically proven, the origin of the name will probably remain a secret forever.
