Here you will find Edmonton's oldest schoolhouse
that was opened in 1881. This school was the first free public
school in Alberta and was used until 1904. In 1982 the City of
Edmonton purchased the building back and moved it back to this site
which is approximately the same location it had originally been.
This building also served as the original courthouse in Edmonton
until the much larger McKay Avenue School was built in 1904. The
McKay Avenue School is situated in this same park and is now the
Edmonton Public School Archives and Museum. It was here that
Edmonton was named the capital of Alberta. (Other cities considered
were Calgary, Red Deer, Banff and even Vegreville) Spend some time
here and learn a bit more about Edmonton and Alberta
history.
