How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Whakaruro Bay, is the first bay south of Karekare, easily accessed around the bluff at the south end of Karekare Beach.

The bay is the home of a colony of Little Blue Penguins, however it is unlikely that you will see any. If you do wish to see them they generally come ashore after sunset, and go out again before sunrise. Sitting quietly in the middle of the beach during these times is your best option for seeing them.

Keep an eye out for their footprints in the sand, and their well worn tracks disappearing up the steep cliffs.

Please do not go up the cliffs searching for their burrows or reaching into any burrows that may be around the GZ. It may be a rabbit hole but it may not, and the cache is not concealed in that way. Also please keep your search to daylight hours.

The area is part of a wildlife reserve, so definitely no dogs.

Cache is a regular sized ammo can, concealed at ground level.

The J Pike Memorial cache is tantalizingly close, however direct access between this cache and that one would be suicidal.
