Geocache Description:

A tribute cache to the Beach Boys ……….. and to the hardy surfers of Aberdeen

The Beach Boys are an American band whose trademark close vocal harmonies and songs about California, surfing, girls and cars continues to earn them a large following some 45 years after they first burst on to the musical stage. Formed in 1961 the band was very much a family affair, consisting of singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. This original line-up, together with David Marks and Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. The band has changed in many ways over the years. Brian Wilson suffered from mental illness leading him to withdraw from touring several times and concentrate on songwriting and record production. This eventually led to the group becoming far more innovative, earning praise from music critics and influencing other musicians over the years. Dennis and Carl Wilson died in 1983 and 1998 respectively and after Carl’s death, founding member Al Jardine was ousted by Mike Love. As of 2008, The Beach Boys continue to tour, with a lineup of Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and a backing band of new musicians. The group has had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number one singles. Rolling Stone magazine listed The Beach Boys as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and according to Billboard Magazine, in terms of singles and album sales, The Beach Boys are the number one selling American band of all time. Their best known tracks include “I get around”, “Surfin’ USA”, “Help me Rhonda”, Dance, Dance, Dance” and “God only Knows”. If you are as old as me you may remember the rather politically-incorrect 1982 TV advertisement for the now defunct Caledonian airlines which parodied another of their greatest hits “California Girls” ending with the line “I wish they all could be Caledonain girls” (http://www.airodyssey.net/multimedia/tvc-bcal.html). The name of the cache is taken from a line in Surfin’ Safari, the title track of their 1962 debut album: Let’s go surfin’ now. Ev’rybody’s learnin’ how. Come on a safari with me. (Come on a safari with...) Early in the morning we’ll be starting out. Some honeys will be comin’ along. We’re loading up our woodie with our boards inside, And headin’ out singing our song. Come on baby, wait and see, yes I’m gonna take you surfin’ with me. (Come on along.) Yes baby, wait and see, yeah, I’m gonna take you surfin’ with me. But why here? It’s not as if Aberdeen is mentioned in any of their songs, is it? Well simply because according to some websites in the know, Aberdeen beach is probably the best all round beach for surfing in Scotland. The wooden groynes not only give the beach its character but also create sandbars and prevent sand loss. This results in various surfing peaks along the length of the beach with predictable peaks of clean plunging waves potentially suitable for all levels of surfers. A westerly wind with easterly swell is ideal and the water quality is good with an average temperature of 4 to 12 degrees Centigrade. And as it’s as warm as it’ll get all year in September this is the best time to get in there…….. seriously. In the week the cache was set I counted 30 surfers all out “catching the waves” one evening. Oh if I wasn’t a Geocacher I think I’d be a Surfer……… See you on the waves! Footnote: How many members of the Beach Boys could surf? Answer – one. Dennis Wilson. He suggested that his brothers compose some songs celebrating his hobby and the lifestyle which had developed around it in Southern California. And the rest, as they say, is history Please take your own pen / pencil. Cache is a magnetic nano.....
