Geocache Description:

In the 1860s, long before John Day and McNary Dams submerged the rapids above and below this point, steamboats would have landed near this area to unload their cargoes of miners and supplies. The cache is located near the present Umatilla Marina Park. You are searching for a cammo plastic yogourt container. Convenient parking is located at the park. Picnic, swim or fish or take pictures to conceal your searching. Could be crowded on hot days and if fishing is good!

While you fish from the jetty, picnic in the park or launch your boat at the nearby marina, you may imagine an earlier time before the dams and before the railroads when steamboats plied the Columbia River. Umatilla Landing was a principle disembarkation point for miners and supplies that were headed for the Boise Basin and other mining boom towns in Eastern Oregon. Have fun exploring the area and imagining a time when this bank was piled high with mining supplies. The streets boasted three dance halls and an equal number of hotels. Umatilla Landing was the first city in Umatilla County. Original cash contained a White Jeep TB, a magnetic Support Our Troops ribbon, a pedometer and other objects.
