Finding the training of airmen impracticable early in 1941, Finding
the training of airmen impracticable early in 1941, Britain and the
RAF entered into an agreement with the United States to train
British cadets in America as civilians. The Army Air Force would
loan the aircraft, and instructors and administrative services
would be provided under contract with civilian companies. The bases
would be commanded by a small RAF staff. They named the new
RAF schools British Flying Training Schools, or BFTSs. No.1 BFTS
(see GCRBGC) was located in Terrell at the Kaufman County Airfield.
Over the next four years 18 RAF flyers would lose their lives
during training. They were laid to rest here far from home.
