If the stream at the north end of Laupahoehoe Point Park is running
due to high rains, this will be a difficult cache to access. The
crossing is extremely dangerous because of the many rocks and
boulders in the stream bed. However, with a dry stream bed--the
cache is accessible.
Laupahoehoe Point is a beautiful, scenic, and serene place. Plan
on a picnic and reading a good book along the shore. Make sure to
visit the memorial to learn the tragic significance of this place.
A trip to the Tsunami Museum in Hilo is a must either before or
after caching.
Park on the northern point. Then proceed to the northwest corner
and enter a path into a small inlet or cove. Go across and up to
the second cove. Behind the cove are large rocks and a clump of
ironwood trees. Watch your footing as you make your way up the hill
opposite the ocean.
If you stand towards the back of the cove looking west, the tree
holding the cache is a bit left of center.
The cache contains a log book and pen. In addition the following
items are available: shell lei, Big Island postcard, Powell's map,
white tiny jeep, breast cancer research pin, wine sticker, duck
pilot figurine, key ring that needs a new battery for its
flashlight.
The cache is maintained by Rae and Mark, who live in the
area.
