Wow, this place sure does bring back memories of my childhood. Way back in the day, this particular area of land was an old airport. Created in the early 1940's, this was an annex airport for the local Naval Air Station. It was maitained as such throught the mid 50's when it was finnally closed. During the 60's it was a Drag Racing strip and my father used to tell stories about being a teenager and going to watch the races with his brothers. The race track was eventually closed leaving an abandoned airfield. In the late 70's, my friends and I would frequently "sneak" into the area by following the fenceline to an opening big enough to ride our motorcycles through. Around 1995 the area was totally cleared of all remnants of the airstrips and developed into what is now Fleming Island Plantation.
