Geocache Description:

An easy stroll around a pretty and lively area, particularly in the Summer months.
The cache is a small tube with a log book and pencil.

Like many of its North American counterparts, the first stage of what was destined to become the Manx Electric Railway was built as part of a private venture -by Douglas Bay Estates Ltd - and financed by the prominent local banking firm - Dumbells Bank of Douglas. While the initial 2 mile line to Groudle Glen was under construction, permission was obtained to extend the line an additional five miles to the important mining village of Laxey. The line is in many ways unique, not least because it still operates entirely with its original rolling stock with the exception of one winter saloon which was rebuilt following a fire in 1992 after which the coachwork was no longer usable. The open trailers afford passengers an unhindered view of the line’s striking scenery with glens, hills, cliff tops and rugged coastline. Manx Electric trams nos 1 & 2 hold a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest operating electric cars. The Mines Tavern was originally the home of the Captain of the Laxey mines.
