Background Information;

Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Garden

The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Garden is located at 300 City Centre Drive and was originally named Civic Garden Park or the Rose Garden. It is 0.17 hectares.

This garden has been part of the Civic Centre since it was originally dedicated on July 18, 1987 by The Duke and Duchess of York. Fifteen years later in October 2002, Buckingham Palace agreed to have the garden formerly named The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Garden in commemoration of Her Majesty The Queen's 50th Anniversary of Her Accession to The Throne.

This is an English Walled Garden based on the floor plan of the post modern architecture of the Civic Centre. The garden layout is representative of the Civic Centre (City Hall): the centre lawn represents the tower; the circular sitting area represents the council chambers; the sculpture lawn represents the great stairs; and the rose garden represents the facade. The strong visual focal points such as the fountain in the square, the Japanese lantern and the sculpture provide interest and lead visitors through the garden. The Jubilee Garden's location is quite fitting as several streets surrounding the Civic Centre honour the Royal Family i.e., Duke of York Blvd., Prince of Wales Drive and Princess Royal Drive.

The Foliage is of four season interest: in the spring there are magnolias, forsythia, serviceberry and bulbs; in the summer there are annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs and vines; in the fall there are burning bush, summer sweet, autumn flowering mums and kale; and in the winter there are evergreens, rhododendrons, hollies and grasses. The planting of the five golden cedars in the garden is symbolic of the five decades of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and her golden jubilee. The garden attracts bird life via native shrub plantings such as serviceberries.

The garden has artistic attractions such as the Japanese lantern that was a gift from Mississauga's sister city Kariya, Japan and was presented to Mississauga in the 1980's to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the twinning of the two cities. The sculpture the Northern Eye done by Anne Harris is cast bronze and steel and is a more humanized example of Harris' work which tends to be more geometric and mechanical in character. This piece evokes a definite sense of vulnerability and is a provocative and dynamic piece as it displays the artist's interest in interior and exterior space and also poignantly references the human body as a vessel and the body, metaphorically, as a wound.

The garden is used extensively by the public and city staff on a regular basis and is often a favourite location for wedding photographs. The addition of the entrance and stairs opens the garden up to the Civic Square and provides better access and a stronger connection to the garden.

There is 1 wheelchair accessible ramp and 2 sets of stairs leading into the garden. Free parking is available near the cache coordinates. Cache responsibly, CITO.

This is my first hidden cache and it connects me to my first find. The start coordinates take you to a statue (Japanese Lantern) with a plaque on it. Take the year on the plaque (1ABC) and plug into the math below.

Had to change to a VIRTUAL, the excellent upkeep of the park by grounds staff and the uncooperative foliage made the cache too easy to find. Enjoy!
