Geocache Description:

The cache is a small painted plastic container and it’s in the Gap. You can pull off the road to park near gz. Be careful of the traffic because sometimes during the day it is quite busy and fast. If you have children with you, be sure to keep them off the road.

This cache is in the vicinity of Short Gap, WV. The town of Short Gap seems to have derived its name from the fact that the trip from LaVale, MD to Winchester, VA, was shorter if one took what is known today as Winchester Road through the gap in West Virginia’s Knobley Mountain at Short Gap. You can no longer follow the original route to the gap. If you had followed Winchester Road straight ahead through Cresaptown, it wound over the hills and valleys to the community of Pinto, MD. There it would have continued straight ahead and over a bridge (no longer present) crossing the Potomac River to West Virginia. From there it went through what today is the property of ATK Corporation (now inaccessible to non-employee public). The road wound up Knobley Mountain and came out on the other side through an area that today is an abandoned quarry site, not too far from the cache site in Short Gap. It definitely was a shorter route than what you need to take today to get from LaVale to the gap. During the time I researched this, I was not able to find the earliest date that the town became known as Short Gap, but I was able to learn that it was a very active road during the Civil War.

The road you take today to reach the cache depends on the direction from which you are approaching Short Gap. The two roads that lead there are WV28 out of Cumberland, MD or Romney, WV, and WV956 that comes off of US220 near Pinto, MD.
