La porte Saint-Jacques
Edifiée au début du XIIIe siècle, à l’entrée nord de la ville (qui comptait alors quatre portes), la porte Saint-Jacques, comme son nom l’indique, s’ouvre sur un chemin de pèlerinage vers Saint Jacques de Compostelle.
Le passage voûté, encadré de deux tours au plan en amande, était défendu par une herse et un assommoir (percé dans la voûte). Il est surmonté d’une salle de garde, accessible par un escalier en vis donnant sur le chemin de ronde de la muraille voisine.
Cette tour-porte a été reprise à la fin du XVe siècle, voire au début du XVIe siècle, comme en témoigne la présence d’une petite ouverture de tir pour arme à feu, protégeant l’entrée.
La plate-forme sommitale, avec son chemin de ronde doté de mâchicoulis, a été reconstituée au XIXe siècle. Le pont de pierre qui enjambe le Thouet a remplacé le pont-levis d’origine.
Built in the early thirteenth century, at the northern entrance of the town (which then had four doors), Saint-Jacques, as its name suggests, opens onto a path of pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostela.
The archway, flanked by two towers at the almond-shaped, was defended by a portcullis and a murder hole (drilled in the vault). It is surmounted by a guard room, accessible by a spiral staircase onto the path round the wall nearby.
This tower door was reinstated at the end of the fifteenth century or the early sixteenth century, as evidenced by the presence of a small opening for shooting firearms, protecting the entrance.
The platform summit, with its walk with machicolation, was reconstituted in the nineteenth century. The stone bridge which spans the Thouet replaced the original drawbridge.
