ATTENTION CACHERS: Pappyshunt will be replacing the cache container soon. My apologies that this little gem has needed maintenance for so long. I've been diagnosed with MS and can no longer cache as I once did. Thanks to pappyshunt for caring for this little gem.
This area of PA has some interesting history, and this is one place you'd probably drive by a hundred times and either never see the memorial, or wouldn't think to do the research to figure out what it was for.....it's all about discovery - and remembering what hardship this area went through during the depression.
BABES IN THE WOODS
On November 24, 1934, three young girls were found dead, wrapped in a blanket, in the woods of South Mountain between Pine Grove Furnace, Pennsylvania, and Huntsdale, Pennsylvania. The three girls were twelve-year old Norma Sedgwick, and her two half-sisters Cordelia and Dewilla Noakes. The girls were killed by Elmo Noakes (Norma's stepfather and Cordelia and Dewilla's father) and his niece, Winifred Pierce. Noakes later killed Pierce and himself in a murder-suicide. It is believed that Elmo Noakes suffocated his children because he did not want to see them starve.
