The Strangler: Over the last few weeks I have had some personal stuff going on and as a result have decided to Archive this cache. Due to poor health and being unable to drive I have not been in a good position to maintain it and number of my caches are in need of maintenance or replacement.
There have been many good times and I have shared some great moments with Geocachers but in recent months it has affected my health and personal life to the extent that I have decided to distance myself from the hobby and concentrate on other things far more important.

PLEASE, May I ask that there is no speculation over my personal circumstances, email me privately and please do not post personal comments here or elsewhere.

Geocache Description:

A cache and dash just to remember the appearance of one of my favourite bands at a slightly bizarre venue. Just a 35mm container. Bring your own pen.

Those who meet me know that my musical tastes are eclectic to say the least. Another favourite band is New Order. I have followed them from the early days just after they dropped the Warsaw name and became known as Joy Division. Ian Curtis the lead singer committed suicide and the remaining members regrouped and became New Order. If you have not watched the superb biopic film ‘Control’ directed by Anton Corbin, then I highly recommend this to you as a background to the band.

During the Late Seventies and early Eighties I did not own a car so getting to gigs was difficult, not least getting home from them! It was when bands came to town on tour that I mostly got to see them and this venue at the time was surreal to say the least. It has always had a bit of a reputation for ‘Grab a Granny’ on Wednesday nights and Friday and Saturday was reserved for the ‘older generation’ to put on the best togs and do their stuff on the dance floor to the popular bands of the time.

Then one night, Monday May 9th 1983, New Order played. The first support was The Wonder Stuff and second support from a very early Happy Mondays. All in the bizzarre settings of crushed velvet curtains and fake palm trees!
Other bands have played the venue over the years such as the Tremeloes, the Fortunes and the Rockin' Berries. New Order played there another two times in 1985 and 1986. According to NewOrderonline the Tower was one of their favourite venues.

The Tower Ballroom dance hall, has stood on the banks of Edgbaston Reservoir for more than 70 years. It closed on New Year's Eve 2005 amid controversial plans to build up to 90 homes on the site. Local people objected strongly and held demonstrations outside Birmingham Council House.
But now the Tower has undergone a £150,000 makeover and every effort is being made to keep its look original with a firm emphasis on nostalgia. The Tower Ballroom was back in the spotlight on Thursday, April 3 2008, with 1960s Liverpudlian pop stars the Searchers and the Merseybeats playing live on the original revolving stage.

Parking is available nearby and in a free car park with restricted opening hours. Parking is only availabe at the Tower during opening times. Sorry, but not wheelchair accessible. Stealth required at most times of day.
