Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the Pennington Loop Nature Trail. Access this cache via Kunkle Park in Pennington – parking is available at N 40 19.968 W 074 47.100. There are several ways to get to the cache but the trail at the end of the parking area offers a good route. There is a kid-friendly cache in Kunkle Park - Arizona Memories (GCNY8K) – link here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=343d7325-b91d-4b78-ba64-8b5c338eab26

This microcache is a bison tube - please bring a pencil. It is located about 130’ off the trail. Though located next to a brook, it is not likely to be affected by any floodwaters. The cache contains a log only – careful removing the log from the cache container. Replace the log by placing it in the cap before you screw it back on. Be careful retrieving the cache.

Enjoy your visit to the Pennington Loop Nature Trail as it courses through a floodplain forest with mature trees along the Stony Brook. The trail connects Kunkle Park to the Baldwin Lake Wildlife Management Area through land preserved by the Delaware and Raritan Greenway Land Trust. These trails can be wet in the spring, particularly if the Brook has spilled out onto the floodplain. Look for vernal pools in the spring along with their resident amphibians. Spring wildflowers include spring beauties, jack-in-the-pulpits, wild geranium and mayapples. Watch for access points to the Stony Brook which will allow for great wildlife watching opportunities and stone skipping. Listen to the creek music while looking for signs of wildlife. Deer and raccoons frequent the Brook – look for their tracks. Great blue and green herons can be found along the Brook and belted kingfishers hunt for food here as well. Forest birds are also abundant all year.

Kunkle Park is a great park for children with a large sand play area and lots of play equipment. Enjoy a picnic at a table or streamside. Careful retrieving the cache – some agility required.
