Geocache Description:

Located on the old Houw Hoek pass between Houw Hoek Inn and Botrivier. There is a footpath down to the cache site - no need to climb the fence. The pass should be done with a high clearance or rental vehicle.

Microcache placed by gr8scot after the original one got lost. Micro cache might still be there. I placed another small cache at a different location. Ideal location for your dual sport motorcycle. When you get to Botrivier, visit the local hotel for a beer. Some history on the old Houw Hoek pass:

First constructed on a meager budget of 600 Pounds Sterling by colonial engineer Sir Lowry Cole.
15 years later, in 1846, Andrew Bain reconstructed the crumbling roadway, spending £4,211 on the job.
Bain's pass was in use for the next 50years or so but it was considered quite dangerous all the same. The sharp geometrics and steep climbs and descents gave it the rather suspect name of P*espas (and also the rather more forgiving name of Higgeldy Piggeldy Pass).

In 1902, one T. Silver drove his automobile from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. He was the very first motorist to do so. After his adventurous journey it became more and more clear that the pass was unsuited for motorised traffic.
In 1930 the pass was again rebuilt with the hope of making it safer.
In 1976 the pass was rebuilt for the last time. This time with four lanes and much smoother gradients.
