Waterfall Grotto - BoBo 1 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Boney Bones: Hi,

Im afraid that the cache was washed away in the summer rains last year. I have worked hard to find the cache along the Clydach gorge, but to no avail.

I have also found that the original site is now in far worse condition with regards to access ... it was slippery and adventurous, but with numerous rains and landslides through the wet summer of 2008 it is now more dangerous to reach.

For these reasons I would like to archive the cache - removing it from current lists. I promise to place another cache nearby to make up for it. Sorry.

Geocache Description:

An ammo box cache located just off the A465 at the top of Clydach Gorge. Only about 200m walk but on very steep, rocky ground and WET under foot. Not to be undertaken lightly. The cache is a purple painted ammo tin in a hidden grotto - complete with a cave, waterfall and river!

This is a beautiful yet forgotten area that I sometimes use for abseiling and gorge walking ... if it was anywhere else I am sure it would be a tourist spot but there does seem to be an unfair amount of rubbish and waste washed down the stream! It is a beautiful place - especially in the sunshine - like a little lost world.

Moving uphill along the A465 Heads of the Valleys road through Clydach Gorge there is a small lay-by on the left, almost at the very top of the hill (Grid Ref SO 20003 12187) - just after a bus stop and before the old garage.

The cache is a purple painted ammo box in a hidden grotto below a thin waterfall and a large natural tunnel / cave opening - just before the river descends underneath the road - Grid Ref SO 20080 12183).

At the lay-by, move onto the rocky / grassy ground by the fence and walk downhill between the low rocky outcrop to your right and the fence to your left. As the rocky outcrop opens up on the right, you will see the thin waterfall, as you may have noticed it from the road. Follow the steep gravelly slope, at the centre of the clearing, down to a low concrete banking and the grotto.

GPS signal is a bit weak here in the summer as the tree cover increases, but the GPS will usually get you to this point. From this concrete banking scramble into the grotto and explore the boulders for the cache. There is a lot of debris that gets washed down the river, so I have located the cache in a position that does not require the river to be crossed. Please be careful what you touch, and look out for where you put your hands (and be sure to wash them before you eat anything afterwards!!).

Please be careful - the ground is rocky and boggy and sturdy footwear must be worn. The slope down to the grotto is steep and can be slippery, it is a serious effort to scramble the short distance out if the grotto. A waterproof jacket and shoes you can get wet are a must for this area. It is an area that has many hazards and must be taken seriously - for this reason I do not recommend that individuals or children attempt to locate the cache, although the cache is on safe and stable ground.

Please let someone know where you are before you attempt this geocache.

The cave is well worth exploring with a torch - as there is a short passage with a large cavern and a waterfall falling into it!! But be warned - I have slipped onto my bum here more than once!
