La Route du Nord was built during the war. It is often stated
that its construction was an idea of the Labour Department of the
States of Jersey to avoid local men for whom there was no other
work having to work for the occupying forces. Quite why the Germans
would have allowed this, unless they considered the road would be
of use to them, I am not sure. There is a simple granite memorial,
dedicating the road to "The Men and Women of Jersey Who Suffered in
the World War", in the car park on the north of the road just
before Les Fontaines Tavern (which does food).
In the seventies or early eighties a section of La Route du Nord
was closed to allow Ronez to expand their quarry and a new road was
constructed further inland. Part of the original road remains; this
is the no through road opposite the pub. It is along this road,
which forks a little way along to create a loop, that this cache
can be found.
The route of the old road can be seen in this page from a
Perry's Guide Maps of the 1960s.
Occasionally this road is closed for motor racing events and
there are several public barbecues on the verges. Most of the time
however, apart from the odd boy racer or motorist stopping to
admire the view, the area is fairly quiet.
There are nice views to the east along the coast and of France,
and to the north of the Paternosters reef. The view to the west,
over the chain link fence, of the large quarry is less scenic,
although impressive in its way.
There is plenty of parking on the road.
The cache is a medium-sized tupperware box. When replacing it,
please make sure it is completely hidden.
