Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden on the grounds of the Fort Plain Museum (with permission from the board of trustees) along the Continental Army's military road from Fort Plain to Cooperstown. Beware of mud in the spring and prickers anytime. Daylight hours only please. There is a Fort Plain t-shirt as the first to find prize.

The museum building is the former Lipe Family homestead housing lots of great tidbits of local history.

The fort itself, no longer standing but once located just east of the homestead, was built by Colonel Dayton in 1776. It served as a refuge for neighbors during the Tory/ Indian raids. In one such raid, in August of 1780, women helped "man" the fort. Legend has it that the women wore men's hats and painted broomsticks black to appear as muskets. The enemy retreated, not attacking the fort. This is reenacted every August during the museum's "Holding Down the Fort" event.
