How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

After the city redid Talbert Marsh, the original cache was severely damaged in the work effort. We have changed the retrieval technique. This was one of our first cache hides and didn't realize the tool needed to retrieve the cache was carried by everyone. The tool is more likely to be needed now, but it is not impossible to get it out with other TOTT.

The area where the tool is has grown a lot more vegetation since the tool was first placed. We have added a more detailed hint to assist.

This is a choice cache. The coordinates take you right to the location of the final container holding the cache. However, when you find the container, the actual cache is inside and not reachable via hand or fingers.

This is where your choice comes into play. You can attempt to use your caching TOTT and retrieve the cache yourself. It is not difficult given the right tool(s). --OR-- you can use the coordinates located at the container to find the tool that makes retrieval easier. Hence, To Tool or Not To Tool.

Give yourself a pat on the back if you can get it without the provided cache retrieval tool.

Couple Rules:

(1) DO NOT remove the container. You have to get the cache out without disturbing the container location.

(2) If you choose to use the cache retrieval tool, you must return it to its hiding place.

(3) The retrieval tool is one piece. DO NOT disassemble it. It shouldn't take too long to figure out how to use it.

This is best done as a bike to cache, but you can certainly walk there. It is a very pleasant walk by the Huntington Beach Wetlands (Talbert Marsh). We have walked there many times. You will see many types of water birds. We have even come across a sea lion on the bike path.

Parking is best on Brookhurst street near the Water Treatment Plant. During the peak summer months, parking can be difficult during heavy beach visiting days.

The cache is about the size of a PEZ dispenser.

FTF is $3, STF is $2. Log and pencil only, no room for swag.
