This area was to be designated as Curtis-Wright property and was
composed of a sixteen sided (polygon) tract of land which was
divided into three bands. These bands facilitated a gradual phasing
into the area. This phase in process coincided with the removal of
camps and cessation of hunting, fishing and trespassing in these
lands. Of this tract 42,596 acres was to be on an annual lease
basis of 66 cents per acre, or approximately $30,000 and contained
a clause of an option to buy. The purchased portion or “ Core Area
“ consisting of approximately 8,500 acres was transferred to
Curtis-Wright at a price of $22.50 per acre, or $191,250. The
Commonwealth in its eagerness to attract Curtis-Wright to the area
also added an inducement of $1.6 million in road improvements.
After Curtis-Wright left the complex there were several other
industrial users over the years, most notably Piper Aircraft.
Permagrain, who made specialty wood floor products, also occupied
the complex for a while.
What you will see is the water supply reservoir for that
complex. Fifty years later this reservoir now supplies water for
“Boot Camp”, a Pennsylvania correctional youth facility, and some
small industrial users in the complex.
From Quehanna Highway at mile marker 1 follow Reservoir Road to
the gate. Park here. There is no winter maintenance on this road.
Do not go through the gate even if it is open. The coordinates
given are for Stage 1. Once you find the first stage stay on that
side of the stream following the Orange blazed trail. This trail
can be wet in places during early spring so be sure to wear
appropriate foot gear. It will be about nine tenths of a mile one
way to the final cache the majority of it on a road until you reach
stage 1.
Enjoy the peacefulness of the area and please make sure
you leave no trace.
