This is Corona Historic site #3, site of the 1913 murder of Marshall G.C. Alexander. Marshall Alexander is the only Corona peace officer to be killed in the line of duty. Corona Independent, December 22, 1913: Marshall Alexander was killed shortly after midnight within 50 feet of his own home. Apparently, he was attempting to restore order in a shack in which some foreigners lived. The marshal had accompanied his wife home from church earlier in the evening and at about 12:30 a.m. heard a “considerable disturbance” in the shacks across from the alley diagonally from the rear of his home. It is not known exactly what occurred but one theory is that he knocked on the door to the shack to ask the occupants to admit him. When there was no answer, he opened the door himself and went it. At that time, he was shot twice, once in the lung and once in the neck. The case was never solved although two suspects were identified but never apprehended. Information at the time indicated that these two suspects had “road (sic) the blind baggage” on the 7:25 Overland train and left Corona, traveling through Prado and onto Santa Ana. This monument and marker were placed July 10, 1996. The Corona Historic Preservation Society of Corona, CA has selected thirteen (as of Feb 14, 2008) sites of historic significance to this city and have placed bronze or granite plaques at these locations. All but three were placed by Boy Scouts as part of their requirement to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Additional information relating to Marshall Alexander and the impact to the community can be found at the Corona Library, Heritage Room, 650 South Main Street, Corona, CA.
