John Charles Darke a surveyor and explorer on his return journey from the Gawler ranges reached these rocks, known as Waddikee Rocks, on the 22nd of October 1844.
Speared by natives the next day, he died on the 24th and was buried at the foot of Darke Peak.
Extract from Darkes journal as entered by Theakstone:
October 24...I have dressed the wounds of Mr Darke, and bled him, but found his extremities getting cold and I informed him I feared the event. About ten o'clock he told me he was dying, that mortification had taken place, he was out of pain; he gave me his last commands, and died five minutes to twelve, quite calm to the last minute.'
An easy climb to the top of Waddikee Rock gives a good view of the surrounding district.
The cache is a 2 litre container with the usual logbook and pencil, a Honda pannikin, plastic bunny, fridge magnet and plastic saw
