Geocache Description:


The listed co-ordinates ar not the cache location but a memorial to the brig Centaur which foundered a short distance off shore from this spot on the 9th of December 105 years before the placque was unveiled by a relative of one of the survivors

The Centaur was built in Aberdeen, Scotland. She was an iron-hulled brig of just under 200tons and was on her way from Champion Bay (Geraldton) to Melbourne laden with galena (lead ore) from the Northampton area. She left Champion Bay on the 4th of December with a crew of nine and four passengers (including the Surveyor General and Commissioner for crown lands Malcolm Fraser) and was under the command of Captain Brabham.

At 3.30pm on the 9th of December, nearing Rottnest the weather became hazy and a strong southerly wind was blowing the ship was headed for Triggs Island but before the captain could put the ship about she ran aground at 5.00pm near where she still lies at a position of 31 51.826s 115 42.667e.

The order was given to abandon ship .The crew and passengers scrambled into two liefboats and rowed to shore and then walked to the nearby Hamersley homestead.

The wreck lies in 7 to 9 meteres of water.
