Geocache Description:

This cache would fit in the “lunch time dash” class of caches, there is nothing special about it (no long walks in our beautiful countryside etc), access is easy only a few stairs to climb, it’s just a few brief notes of Dunedin history!
The cache it’s self is a black-painted one and half litre snaplock.

I was looking at an 1884 Map of Dunedin and the name Nevada caught my eye.

Back in 1884 the City of Dunedin’s boundary ran along the edge of the “Town Belt” and an area NNW of the Octagon on the other side of the town belt in the Upper Kaikorai District had the name Nevada on it.
I don’t know about you but the name Nevada immediately brings to mind the State in the USA with Las Vegas and all its casinos, and the giant Hover Dam on the Colorado River, well there are definitely no casinos in this Nevada.

I investigated a little further and came across an advertisement for an auction that had been published in an 1880? Otago Daily Times

Saturday 30th April at 2 o’clock, 18 sections in the favourite township of Nevada and 4A, 3R, 20P of adjoining land, Montagu Pym, auctioneer, High Street.
Subdivision bounded by District Road and the town belt and adjacent to residence of A. C. Strode Esq, Roslyn, Dunedin.

Montagu Pym went on to describe the area using the following “glowing” terms.
The land lies on a gentle slope, commanding a most extensive and varied view of the City of Dunedin, the North East Valley, the harbour, and the ocean.
This healthy and favourite township.
It is universally admitted to be the healthiest suburban locality about Dunedin.

I am sure his client A.C. Strode Esq was more than please with his advert!

The sections were all at least quarter of an acre, and a number had been already sold; I believe the area had been subdivided as far back as 1871.
District Road is today called Highgate and through the centre of the subdivision runs Pacific Street.

The cache is located on what I believe is the NE boundary of the subdivision or should I say Township.
