Relocated and reactivated, this cache will bring you to one of
the old WW2 airfields of North Yorkshire. As the reason for the
cache is the historic aspect please don't expect any spectacular
views - it's flat and, more often than not, windy!
This cache is located close to what was once East Moor airfield.
Opened in May 1942 with a main concrete runway nearly 2000 yards
long, this base was, at various times, home to three squadrons from
the Royal Canadian Airforce, the memorial to those who didn't
return being found in nearby Sutton-on-the-Forest (see
GC19D51). Like many wartime airfields in North Yorkshire it had
a relatively short life, being closed to flying in June 1946. Just
to the east of the cache site is a suitable area for parking,
adjacent to a gateway leading to what was pan type hardstanding 32.
The large concrete blocks across the entrance were once used to
anchor down the aircraft in bad weather. The hangers have gone and
much of the concrete has now been broken up and the land returned
to agricultural use although part of the runway is used as a base
to support several buildings used in the rearing of pigs. More
details on East Moor airfield can be found at http://www.raf.mod.uk/bombercommand/s90.html
Given it's location, this cache has a theme, and that is birds,
either avian or mechanical. The cache is a 1.8 litre lock and seal
container, and at the time of placement contained the
following:
Logbook
Pencil
Pencil sharpener
All the above to remain in the cache please.
It also contained:
Several RSPB bird badges
Bird theme erasers
Yorkshire Air Museum keyrings depicting a Halifax bomber, a
familiar aircraft at this base.
As the cache is located on a quiet country lane it is often used
as a place for people to dispose of their unwanted rubbish. Whilst
the new location is away from the worst of it there are still items
in the road side verges.
Please rehide the cache carefully!
