How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

In order to find the fifth ultimate element (warning: cheesy caching tie-in looming), Cacheonium, you must first understand the deepest secrets of four classical elements and using information found there, derive the location of Cacheonium!!

At the supplied coordinates of each of the four classical elements, you will find a non-standard redirect. On each redirect there will be 1, 2 or 3 letters as well as the geocaching logo (so you'll be sure to know you found them). For every letter you find, add the associated north or west offset to the listing's coordinates to get the coordinates for the final.

FTF prize is an unactivated GC10000 geocoin. Please take care to replace redirects exactly as you found them. Also, take the difficulty and terrain ratings and attributes seriously when heading out for the elements and final cache.

Waypoint info (added Oct 8, 07):
Earth: Overall diff 3.5. Not suitable for children.
Air: Overall diff 2.5. Not suitable for children.
Water: Overall diff 2.5.
Fire: Overall diff 2.5. Urban location. Please only do during the day.
Cacheonium: Overall diff 2.5. Proper path choice gets you to within 5m of cache as well as a near limitless supply of Red Delicious apples (at the right time of year).

Redrect info (added Oct 8, 07): Nothing bigger than a hardball, nothing smaller than a AAA battery. None are containers.

Note that this series can be done by bike, although it would be a decently long (but satisfying) ride (bring a bike lock). No matter how you do decide to do it, a fair amount of travel is likely required between 3 of the 4 caches and the final.

Many thanks to Fababoo for his help with the redirects. Honorable mentions to Luc & Sweety and BBoG for ideas I've used from caches they own.

Note that although the location for "Fire" is on public property, the people who work on the property have given me permission to have the cache there. Three people know about it including the one in charge.

Oct 4: Publish Date. No hints, clues or redirect descriptions supplied until FTF logged.
Oct 8: Adventure Rat FTF. Added basic waypoint and redirect info, but no hints.
Oct 13: Added hints.
Oct 30: Removed bridge warning (there was bridge construction nearby when this cache was published - it's been fixed now).
Nov 4: Updated coords on Final, Air and Water. Added final hint.
