This area was once part of the “Great wood of the Dufferin” which stretched from Crossgar to Strangford Lough and from Downpatrick to Bangor. It would have been central to the great hunting woods of the 1500’s, yet little now exists of these old woods with only the woods around the Quoile and the Clandeboye remaining. The land was bought in late 1999 and planted in spring 2000 with the purpose of creating a 14 acre native woodland near to Crossgar. The hill has been planted with native trees of oak, ash, birch, willow, hazel and rowan . A circular grassy path allows a visitor a pleasant walk through the young woodland.
