These caches do not need to be done in order, but
the story flows a logical sense when read in order.
All parts of this story assume Advanced Dungeons
& Dragons 2nd Edition Rules – Monstrous Manual reference. I
know it is archaic now, but the story was written with that
universe in mind.
DRAGONS
OF LETHBRIDGE
Few people nowadays remember,
and there are fewer records still about the Dragons of
Lethbridge. Lethbridge provided one of the best breeding grounds and
terrain for Dragons of days gone by. They had been pushed out of
their traditional breeding grounds in Europe, fled from China, and
moved north through the continent from the warmer, more southern
climes to the area of Lethbridge.
The summers were hot, the
winters cold, but the coulee and the Oldman River (during this time known as the
Belly River) provided ample grounds for a small
population of Dragons to flourish. Alas, over time, a great many of
them have vanished, but some clues can be found among the
rubble-strewn areas, where now a highway runs
through.
Part I – the
Baby
The first incident occurred in
June 1907. A CP Rail employee scouting a section of the bridge
disturbed a baby dragon that was learning to fly. The baby, not
knowing what to do for it had had limited contact with humans at
this point in its life, defended itself from this perceived threat.
Unfortunately, Mr. Thomas did not survive the
encounter.
This would set the stage for
the events that followed.
The human population,
aggrieved at the loss of the surveyor demanded that the baby be
removed, forcibly if needed. A small group of CP Rail employees
arranged a hunting party and set out, armed with rifles. They
descended into the coulee and tracked the baby, finally cornering
him near his nest.
A valiant fight was fought,
but the baby was not large enough, and its breath weapon was not
strong enough to repel more than the fifteen people he killed in
his defense. Those that didn’t die were not uninjured, as the
chlorine gas the Baby had used caused an impressive amount of
damage to their eyes and lungs. Although he was defeated, his nest
was never found.
To
find the Baby’s lair:
There is enough information
above to determine what kind of dragon the Baby is. In case there
is any confusion – and because it’s the first of the series – I
will say that it is a chromatic dragon.
From the posted
coordinates:
Add : (The maximum damage an
8th level dragon of this kind can do with it’s
breath weapon + 3) / 1,000 to the northing.
Add : (The experience points for
slaying a baby dragon / 8,169.9) from the
westing.
