The cache is located just off the public
footpath close to Riber Castle in
Matlock. There are commanding views over Matlock and the
surrounding areas. Riber castle is one
of Derbyshire’s most famous landmarks and was built in 1862 as a
residence for Mr John Smedley, a
prominent character in Matlock during the period. He also built
Smedleys Hydro in Matlock Bath. The
castle, in
it's short
history, has been used as a boy's school, a food store during World
War Two and in the early 1960's a group of zoologists created a
Nature Reserve for British and European Fauna within the castle
grounds. The Nature Reserve closed in September 2000 and during the
following month the fixtures, fittings & animals were auctioned
off.
Car parking is available in
Riber village, a path towards the cache
can be found by following the road up to
Riber Castle and then turning off down
a narrow path where the closed gates block access to the Castle
itself.
Unfortunatley
the castle is now closed to the public but it’s worth the trek up
the hill just to see the view.
Please replace the cache as you found
it.
