This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

An easy park and grab in a small park in Peapack. Come, grab the cache, and get a quick history lesson.

This cache is located near an old limestone kiln.

NOTE: THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED ON TOP OF THE KILN OR UNDERNEATH IT, SO THERE IS NO REASON TO GO PAST THE WOODEN FENCE OR UP THE HILL.

This limestone kiln was active in Peapack, New Jersey from 1794 to 1945. At this park, you can learn about the limestone kilns and it has a bulletin board of information. Here is a brief summary of the bulletin board:

"Before the year 1800, New Jersey farmers began to notice that crops in many of their fields were not growing well. This was because the soil had been used for so many years that the soil had a high level of acid. When powdered lime is spread on the ground it dissolves in rain water and is absorbed by the soil. This neutralizes some of the acid in the soil and produces better growing conditions."

So to sum it up, these kilns were used to burn limestone into powders which helped grow crops by lowering the levels of acid. Hope you enjoy this quick cache and history lesson!
