Geocache Description:

The terrain is easy and VERY popular with Muggle dog walkers so keep an eye out for them. You can park at N54 00.901 W001 03.730 and walk all the way to the cache.

Haxby, now a town with a population numbering some 10,000 was founded on the ancient forrest of Galtres by Danish settlers over 1,000 years ago.

Haxby Landing is situated North East of the town and is aptly named because in 1941 a Whitley bomber safely made a forced landing on Landing Lane when returning from a mission.

The Whitley was the first modern style monoplane heavy bomber of the RAF and entered service in 1937. It also has the distinction of being the first bomber to fly night operations to Germany during WWII. The Whitley was capable of carrying a greater bombload than it's nearest rival, the Wellington. The main production model was the MkV of which 1,445 were built and ultimately equipped 15 squadrons.
