This is the 14th in my series of hides near fire lookout towers.
Black Butte Lookout, 6235', in the Malheur National Forest, was built in 1933. It started as an L-4 cab atop a 15' wooden pole tower. Over the years the original legs were replaced with a treated timber superstructure and the original window shutter system phased out with a more permanent solution. It continues to be used during periods of extreme fire danger and after lightning storms. As of 2017, the lookout is now in condemned status (:() and the stairs have been boarded up to keep people off the tower. Not to worry, the extra 15' doesn't improve the view all that much as what you can see from the ground. From Highway 395 at Beech Creek Summit, turn west on County Road 88 (FS 3950). Within 1 mile turn south on Forest Road 3955. Follow uphill to Road 3956. Follow this to the 034 spur to the top. It's about 7 miles one way from the Highway. NOTE: the last 2 miles are rough/rocky/muddy/dusty/steep and washed out in places. Leave the low-clearance rig at home or walk from Turn #4. You're seeking a camo-painted lock-n-lock container with logbook, writing instruments, and a few trades.
