Small cache in public area located adjacent to Cambridge Bay (Ikaluktutiak) airport terminal building. Easy park-and-grab or something to do for connecting passengers.
In the mid 1950s, the threat of Soviet nuclear-armed bombers flying in over the Pole led to the construction of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) System. Over fifty overlapping radar stations across Greenland, Canada and Alaska provided coverage. Satellite surveillance and improved radar and other sensing technologies led to the retirement of most of these stations, but one of the remaining is across from the Cambridge Bay airport. This airport is also a mini-hub for passengers transferring between jet service from southern Canada to smaller aircraft serving Arctic towns and villages.
After spending long connection times between flights here, year after year, I thought that providing a cache nearby would be a service to some future passengers.
