Geocache Description:

First thanks to Evil Chicken for volunteering to co-sponsor this cache!!

We have been coming to LBI for years but in the past have had to go off-island to do some caching which is understandable since most of LBI is private property. As a result we have decided to place at least one new cache on the island to go along with the others that have been placed in the past two years by k9zues and others. This then is our first - Old Barney - an easy but informative "puzzle" cache. The above coordinates will take you to the parking kiosk at the Barnegat Light State Park. The lighthouse is quite interesting in itself, but there are many other things to see and do in the Park.

To find the cache, you need to get on the Nature Trail. You can follow it in either direction. At certain informational points along the way, you must find a number which you will use in the coordinates below to find the final cache.

On the Nature Trail find the following (not necessarily in order.):

Virginia Creeper
Virginia creeper is a plant that has a certain number of leaves. Call this A

Black Cherry
The wood of this tree is prized for making a certain product. How many letters are in this word? Call this F

Bayberry
In what month (number) does it turn silver gray? Call this D

Beach Heather
There is a two digit number included in the text. Subtract the digits and call the result B

Shadbush
In what month (number) do shadbush berries first ripen? Call this E

American Holly
How many leaves are shown on the picture/drawing? Call this C

Now plug the numbers you have found into the following coordinates

N 39 45.ECD W 74 06.BAF

The final is a yellow, plastic, cylindrical container with room for small items or travel bugs. Original contents include a log book and pencils along with some size-appropriate trade items. It is a short 5-10 minute walk (or even shorter bike ride) from the lighthouse, but you will have to leave the State Park to get there. No bushwhacking is allowed nor is it necessary. Stay on the pavement, be aware of muggles, and please re-hide it carefully.

Update 8/18/10
PLEASE NOTE RECENT LOGS! Apparently there is a wasps nest in or near the hiding spot. If someone would bring some insecticide I am sure future cachers would appreciate it.
