Geocache Description:

South Brisbane Memorial Park

In 1924, the City of Brisbane Act was passed by the Queensland Parliament, amalgamating the Cities of Brisbane and South Brisbane; the Towns of Hamilton, Ithaca, Sandgate, Toowong, Windsor and Wynnum; and the Shires of Balmoral, Belmont, Coorparoo, Enoggera, Kedron, Moggill, Sherwood, Stephens, Taringa, Tingalpa, Toombul and Yeerongpilly to form the current City of Greater Brisbane, now known simply as Brisbane City, in 1925. This series of caches will celebrate these former local goverments and their amalgamation.

South Brisbane Borough Council was formed in 1888, and become South Brisbane Town Council and then South Brisbane City Council in the same year, 1903.

The former South Brisbane Municipal Chambers, which are across the road from South Brisbane Memorial Park, were constructed during 1891-2.

It is a rare masonry municipal chambers in Brisbane, and the most substantial and ornate prior to construction of the new Brisbane City Hall in the 1920s. The former South Brisbane Municipal Chambers is a most accomplished and intact building in form, fabric and feature, the first in Brisbane to be designed in free classical style, the first in Australia to incorporate an electrically-driven clock system, and is an excellent example of its type. It possesses strong landmark and aesthetic qualities and makes an important contribution to the historic precinct centred around South Brisbane Memorial Park.

The area centred on South Brisbane Memorial Park is somewhat of a historical district of Brisbane, with the former South Brisbane Library, South Brisbane Municipal Chambers, South Brisbane Railway Easement and the South Brisbane Dry Dock nearby. Other historically significant places in the immediate vicinity include Cumbooquepa (Somerville House) and the Ship Inn.

The cache itself is in the field piece in the memorial park, and shouldn't take too much searching. WARNING: There have been some reports of inconsiderates leaving used sharps in the holes in the base of the field piece. The cache is not in these holes, and can be seen if you are looking from the right angle. So be careful, and don't put your hand where you cannot see.

The cache also contains one of the four clues you will need to find the final cache in this series, which will be listed when enough of the series have been placed.
