RAF Churchstanton was built in 1940 and opened on 1st August 1941. It's name was quickly changed to RAF Culmhead to avoid confusion with RAF Churchfenton in Yorkshire.
It was predominantly a fighter base for Spitfires and hurricanes. Polish, Czechoslovakian and English pilots all flew from here. Following D-day Culmhead was used for training by the first jet engined aircraft in RAF service. 2 Meteors arrived in July 1944 and left in August of the same year.
It was eventually closed in August 1946 and then became a top secret radio listening station during the cold war.
Cache is hidden on top of wall under ivy.
Don't forget your pen.
