Geocache Description:

Philadelphia has more than 2700 murals – more than any other city in the world. Come see a treasured part of the Philadelphia landscape. BRING YOUR OWN PENCIL OR PEN TO SIGN THE LOG!

Calling itself "America's City of Murals," Philadelphia boasts more than 2700 of murals for people to enjoy each year. This cache is located at the foot of one of Philadelphia's murals created by the Mural Arts Program (MAP).

Entitled "Lincoln Legacy," this mural was created by Josh Sarantitis with the assistance of  Eric Okdeh, David Gray, Kien Nguyen and inmate artists at SCI Graterford. Created in January 2006, it was made using mosaic tile and photo transfer (parachute cloth). The mural measures almost 10,000 square feet and is made from more than one million ¾-inch glass tiles from Italy and France. It is the largest glass-tile mosaic in Philadelphia.

Recent construction has filled in the gap at the top of the building. This mural features a young girl reflecting on the legacy of her past. It contains multiple levels of meaning, including:

  • The red and white stripes of the United States flag which morph into the decks of a slave ship
  • Shackles used for enslavement
  • A map of Africa used by slave traders
  • An African mask that looks like a skull representing the multitudes of suffering caused by slavery and its legacy through present day America.
  • An Abraham Lincoln coin, a Stephen Douglas coin, and an 1838 abolitionist coin from England depicting a freed slave with a quote: "Am I not a woman and a sister."
  • A West African medallion (in her palm) used for protection during the Middle Passage.
  •  A middle-aged woman rising from the blue flames that surround the medallion, representing the young girl as her future self, as well as her ancestors who survived the African Diaspora

Each year, the MAP works with more than 100 neighborhoods to create art that reflects the culture of Philadelphia. Annually, the creation of these wall paintings employs more than 300 artists, and helps more than 3,000 at-risk youth. MAP's mission is to engage in art education and community public art collaborations, and to increase public access to art. Since it began, MAP has produced more than 2,700 murals and educated 20,000 underserved and at-risk youth in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia.

A micro cache is located at the coordinates.

*Please note: This cache was created as part of the King Tut Treasure Tour. The Tut Treasure tour also had an accompanying scavenger hunt, which described this stop as a virtual. However, there IS a micro cache at the posted coordinates, so please find & sign log.
