Thomas Brassey (7 Nov 1805 - 8 Dec 1870) was an English civil
engineering contractor and manufacturer of building materials who
was responsible for building a large portion of the world's
railways in the 19th century. By the time of his death he had been
responsible for building about one-third of the railways in
Britain, three-quarters of those in France, and major lines in many
countries throughout Europe, and in Canada, Australia, South
America and India, together with their associated docks, bridges
and viaducts, stations, tunnels and drainage works. In addition he
had played a role in the development of steamships, mines,
locomotive factories, marine telegraphy and water supply and sewage
systems. More can be found out about Thomas Brassey at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Brassey.
In 1829 aged just 24, Thomas Brassey constructed his first bridge
at Saughall Massie on Wirral. This old bridge still stands today
and has recently been granted Grade 2 listing by English Heritage.
A new “interpretation board” and plaque to mark the importance of
this structure is to be unveiled by Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Peter
Johnson on Saturday 28th April 2007 at 11am.
The first stage of this multi-cache contains the co-ordinates of
the final cache, plus the suggested route to follow if on foot. As
the bridge is a grade 2 listing, it is not on the bridge or in the
stonework. Look for it, and once you see it, check for muggles
before retrieving. Again, check all is clear before replacing
exactly as found. The final stage of this multi-cache contains the
usual logsheet, pencil and a FTF certificate. Please ensure it is
covered properly when you replace it.
