1849 saw the beginning of British Columbia's gold rush. There were riches to be found in the hills and treasure seekers from around the world flocked to British Columbia in hopes to find the mother lode. For the next sixty years the mountains rang out with the clang of pick axes. Valleys echoed with the sound of sandy soup slopping from gold pans.
Those who found the precious ore stashed their caches in crags and crevices in the land itself. To this day there are still rumours of long lost treasure tucked in the hills of British Columbia.
By 1920 the rush was over. Most gold seekers earned little more than a meagre existence while the lucky few who found the mother lode were poised to become British Columbia's first Nuveau rich. It was they that could take full advantage of the Roaring Twenties and the luxuries the new, modern era had to offer.
From March 31st to April 30th the BCGA we will be recreating this era in British Columbia's history by encouraging geocachers across the province to hide and seek caches. This treasure hunting rush will culminate in a Province-wide events filled with geocaching riches. Those that participate in the Cache Blitz could be rewarded.
