Geocache Description:

Welcome to a micro-cache that will take you to a rural churchyard cemetery south of Nelson. The cache has been placed with permission. The Yew Tree multi (GCRP53) was archived in order to give others more space in the Richmond area to place caches. If you found the old cache, a second visit to this site may be well worth your time, not just a new find. Just read below. This is a NEW cache!!

NOTE: DEC 2023, Update to position - cache is a berocca tube wrapped in tape. To find it you have to reach (with left hand) through the gap and back around where it is tucked into the folds of the trunk. Shorter people may have to stand on a root at base of tree to reach far enough. This is positioned to no longer 'fall out' of the tree when replaced. Well before the Christian era to the present, the Yew tree has had a long association with religious sites. Almost every church yard in the UK has a Yew tree. Our early settlers introduced the tree and its mystic "powers" to New Zealand. The Nelson area was no exception. The Yew trees are a living link to the past. They are known to be thousands of years old. The wood has been prized for its durability. The oldest human tool found in Europe was a Yew wood spear from the Padaeoletic period. The best of the famous English Long Bows were made of Yew wood. Because of its longevity, durability, strength and evergreen foliage, the Yew tree has long been identified by many religions as a living symbol of spirtual strength and immortality and a protection against all that is evil for both the living and the dead. Thus, its location in church yard cemeteries. To circle backwards three times around the tree will bring good fortune, protection and a long life.
