Hog Wild Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Capt. Bud: Spent some time doing Maintenance Visits on some of my caches today. This one does not see much action any more. It requires a lot of maintenance time, and I guess most of the Cachers that wish to do a cache of this type have already done it. That said, I decided that it was time to put Hog Wild out to pasture. I could not find a couple of the re-direct stages, but all the rest and the cache itself has been removed.

Thanks to all that visited here –
Capt. Bud

Geocache Description:

A multi-stage projection cache, along the Old Datsun Trail in the Charlotte Harbor State Buffer Preserve. Parking for your GeoVehicle can be had at N 26 51.079 W 082 01.327

I fell in love with the Old Datsun trail a couple years ago, when I did the “Mariner #1” cache (GCJ466) located here. I finally decided that I just had to place one in here as well. Shortly after I started hiking the trail in with my freshly stocked 30 cal ammo can, and of course being distracted by the beauty and serenity of this place, I was suddenly attacked by a really ticked off Wild Hog. It seems that I inadvertently tromped in between her, and her herd of little piggies. Shocked of course, I dropped the ammo can as I hurriedly climbed a near-by tree. Well – this crazy mad Pig Mom picked up my ammo can, and took off. I certainly was not about to loose that can, and give up my dream of placing a cache along this trail, so after her I went. After a couple hours of diligent tracking I was finally able to locate my wayward cache, and much to my delight, the Mean Mommy was nowhere to be seen. I actually thought that where she dropped it was a pretty good spot to leave it, so that’s where it is. However, as I was so intent on following the trail left by this Wild Hog, I failed to tag the coordinates where it is located. Fortunately though, I was able to reconstruct all of the turns that she made as she ran away with my ammo can. So, in order to find this cache, it will be necessary to follow the same route, locating all of the turns that she made.

You must be able to do projections with your GPSr in order to do this cache. As you progress through your journey, all distances referenced are statute, and all bearings are true. Please stay on the trail, and do not bushwhack between stages. All of the re-direct points are very close to the trail, in areas that are fairly open and easy to get to. Completion of this cache will take you around the entire loop of the Old Datsun Trail, which is listed as 1-3/4 miles. For more information on the Charlotte Harbor State Buffer Preserve, please see the following link. (visit link) This cache is placed with the permission of the Park Manager.

Update: 12/17/2010:
The route for this cache is along trails that are open and marked, which will take you (eventually) in a counter-clockwise circle. At times your GPS may indicate that you are going in the wrong direction from stage to stage. However, trust is a must, as the trail will eventually circle around to where you want to get. As mentioned in the paragraph above, all stages are very close to the trail, and are in areas that are pretty easy to get to.
