The Pigeon Island Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geo Seek: Pidgeon Island has been placed in a private land trust that will now limit public use of the island. The DNR administers permits for specific uses of the island and they have notified me that this cache is to be removed. I know that this is unfortunate as geocachers do not trash places and enjoy the beauty and educational opportunities of caches that are placed. I guess this is the end of our enjoyment of another piece of land in Georgia but I guess if it prevents the campers from trashing the place it will be worth it.

Geocache Description:

Congratulations to sneely for being the First To Find.

This cache is an ammo box that is located on an island, so a boat is necessary to access. Some mild bushwhacking is needed.

The Pigeon Island Cache is dedicated to the memory of Cher Ami who was a famous carrier pigeon that was credited with saving the lives of over 200 American soldiers during World War I.

Wireless communications were not available during WWI and troops on the front used carrier pigeons to communicate with command headquarters located to the rear of the front. Cher Ami, although wounded by German gunfire, delivered information that stopped friendly artillery fire from falling on American Troops. Upon recognition of the bravery of this pigeon, the French awarded a medal to Cher Ami, the French Croix de guerre. When Cher Ami died, he was preserved by a taxidermist and is now on display with his medal at the Smithsonian Institution.
