Al the Octopus is the mascot of the Detroit Red Wings (my favorite hockey team). During the 1952 playoffs, a local fishmonger tossed an octopus onto the ice, its 8 legs symbolic of the 8 wins a team needed at that time to win the Stanley Cup. Today it takes 16 wins, but the tradition still holds. The octopus is named after Al Sobotka, the Joe Louis Arena ice manager/Zamboni driver because he is known for twirling the tossed octopi over his head after removing it from the ice. GO WINGS!
