Travel bugs seem to regularly disappear from urban caches and at caching events. Please drop this item in rural or Premium Member Only caches. Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts—then the chain and tag won't tangle with other items. Otherwise, take this bug everywhere—no permission is needed to leave the US.
Laminated Photograph. The TB owner was trained as a field biologist back in the dim time. Though retired from full-time work, he has continued some summer projects, mostly involving bats. This photo was taken in southeastern Utah. Despite the benign appearance, there lurks many tiny, but sharp teeth.
The Canyon Bat is found in Mexico and in the western United States. It is commonly the first bat foraging and drinking in the evenings, often well before dark. In the fall, they may be seen even in late afternoon. If you want to see one, at dusk wait beside an isolated pool of relatively calm, permanent water in a canyon and watch the sky. The species is characterized by erratic and butterfly-like flight when feeding. Like virtually all other bats they drink on the fly, like swallows. When about to approach the water surface their flight is a little more direct.
It is the smallest bat in the United States; an adult male has a body about the size of the end on a woman's thumb. They weigh between 0.1-0.2 oz (3-6 g). Their wingspan is between 7-9 in (19-23 cm).
